One very quick way of creating a unique identity for a project or a brand is the use of the correct font (one that compliments a design rather than creating confusion or grating with the composite, thus lessening the impact of the design. There are many fonts on the web that are free to download, but be careful of these as they are not as well thought out and designed as fonts for commercial use. Creative Venom™ have listed some websites at the foot of this article, where you will find affordable fonts and therefore benefit long-term from the professionalism. If there is a specific font you are looking for, let Creative Venom™ know and we will do our best to locate it for you. We will even design you a custom font (character set) if you feel your brand or project requires something really special - you can also be guaranteed that no one else will have that particular font.
You need to be aware of the varying fonts out there. The modern Mac computer can read, copy and render just about any typeface. PostScript fonts are viewed by some as the most professional format, but can be tricky to use if you are a novice to them. It's the oldest version you are likely to use and there will normally be a Bitmap for on-screen purposes and a Vector for printing purposes.
TrueType fonts are far more easier to work with although be careful, as there are Mac and Windows flavours of this font format. Be sure to work with the correct version. The Mac will read a Windows TTF but you may experience behavioural problems during the printing stages.
The modern favourite is the OpenType font format. This is the most versatile and it gives you access to the most glyphs and variants such as weights, swashes and symbol sets. The beautiful thing is that this format is cross-platform. The only downside is that this format normally derives from a professional font intended for commercial use.
Please do not hesitate to contact Creative Venom™ if you need any advice or help surrounding the correct use of fonts, we are only to glad to assist. In the meantime we recommend these paid-for sites to get you thinking about the most suitable font for your graphic design needs.
